A Message From Mr. Ruhl:

In Full Swing

As I come home on school nights I know I’m in for a few more crazy hours of kid …football, homework, music, and not to mention trying to get a bite to eat myself.  As parents and teachers, our days are filled with scheduled events from morning to evening.  It is far too easy to lose track of our students’ emotional needs amongst the chaos. I am as guilty of this as any parent. A strategy we often discuss at school is “take 2.”  Take 2 is setting aside a simple 2 minutes every day for students to just let you know what they want to talk about or share, free of our parent/teacher probing questions.

I often try to avoid the time right after school. It seems like things would be fresh in their little minds, but they are emotionally exhausted right after school. Be selective about finding a time they are naturally calm. As hard as it is, I wait until just before the bedtime routine. With just a few minutes children can rebuild connections, unload some stress, or just share something important.  You will find, as we do, that it may help to slow things down and make for a much more calm and happy child at home and school.
