October 2019 Newsletter

A Message From Mr. Ruhl:

Greetings Emmeline Cook Families!

In an effort to create a stronger partnership between home and school, we are very excited to continue our contact plan to include Get to Know You Conferences, Family Nights and Parent/Teacher conferences. I hope everyone has found value in our GTKY conferences and Fall Family Night. As always, our goal is to bring families in and let them learn about the experiences and programs in their student’s school.

November Conferences: (by Teacher request only) will be held on Thursday, November 13th from 3:00pm - 5:30pm

  • You will be contacted individually by your student’s teacher

  • This is an opportunity to have an additional time to discuss your students goals and growth

  • While we do not contact everyone for conferences at this time, we are always open to discussing student progress at any time

Individual Conferences: will be held on Tuesday, February 11th from 3:00pm-6:30pm & Wednesday the 12th from 2:00pm-6:30pm

  • The purpose of this conference is to get updates on strengths and needed improvement while there is still a large amount of time to make positive growth

  • Notices will be sent home for scheduling in January

Last Call for Family Fee Contributions:

The minimal PTO fundraising done throughout the year does not bring in enough money to support all the extra programs and activities at E. Cook.  We still need your help! The E. Cook PTO is asking each family to contribute a family fee, in the amount of $10, $20, $25 or whatever you are able.  Check Blue Envelopes on Wednesday a simple form and envelope to send any contribution back to school. More information can be found HERE

You are the PTO!!!

We value your input, your time and your opinions.  This year, the PTO will have rotating meeting times to better partner with parents, staff and the community.  Mark your calendars to attend. We will be discussing projects and issues that affect our children and community.  Please join us!

October Social Skills Focus:

We had our first Freaky Friday on September 27th.  We had a whole school assembly where we joined our Freaky Friday teachers.  Each group is a combination of grade levels. We all went back to our assigned rooms and participated in a get-to-know-you activity. Each student passed a ball or other item around and said their name.  Freaky Friday isn’t really “Freaky.” It is just a fun name that E Cook came up with.

October PBIS Raffle:

1 lucky student will be picked to be the all school Halloween Parade Line Leader!  And 8 lucky students, (3) from from Kindergarten thru 2nd Grade, and (3) from 3rd Grade thru 5th Grade will win a pumpkin carving activity.

Social Skills Tip of the Month:

Encourage your child to follow the Cougar Way at all times.   Discuss with your child how they can follow the Cougar Way at home. Have them give you an example of how they can be safe, be respectful and be responsible.

Looking Ahead:

Thank you for coming to Family Night!

Weather Clothing Guidelines

During this time of year Mother Nature sure does like to confuse us Wisconsinites and we just never know what type of clothing to wear for outdoors.  Here are some guidelines that we follow:

  • If the temperature is BELOW 50° -  A COAT IS REQUIRED
  • If the temperature is BETWEEN 50° - 60° - LONG SLEEVES ARE REQUIRED
  • If the temperature is ABOVE 60° - NO COATS ARE REQUIRED

We have decided to try and help students remember these guidelines by posting these signs at the recess doors.

E. Cook Traffic Plan

Let’s talk about DROP OFF & PICK UP SAFETY.

We understand the the weather is sometimes not favorable, or sometimes we are running late, but it is even more important at those times that we abide by the traffic plan that we have in place for the safety of the students.   It becomes very dangerous for students if this plan is not followed.

  • NO parent vehicles should be in the circle drive between 7:30am - 8:00am, this area is reserved for school bus traffic ONLY!

  • Please be very aware of the crosswalk and the Crossing Guard at the corner of Hazel and Bent Avenue.  The majority of our students cross at that intersection.

  • If you have to come in, PLEASE, make every attempt to park off of Hasel to allow the other parents to make quick drop-offs or pick-ups.  (Traffic will be monitored closely by law enforcement and tickets could potentially be issued)

School Illness Protocol

If your student is not feeling well and you are unsure if they should come to school, here is the policy that Emmeline Cook and the Oshkosh Area School District follows.

Please remember that you need to call your student in to the school office before 8am at 920-424-0152, and if your student rides the bus you must call Kobussen as well at 920-424-7575.
